WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE SEAFOOD?Using scientific research and strict criteria by our Federal Fisheries Agency "NOAA"
(National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration) our USA Pelagic Longline Fishing Vessels have and continue to "lead the way" to protect and revitalize while continually working alongside our government to create more efficient fishing practices. |
WHAT MAKES USA "WILD-CAUGHT" FISH THE BETTER CHOICE?
The USA is the only country that requires the use of circle hooks in it's Pelagic Longline
Fleet. Circle hooks are generally defined as hooks having points that are perpendicular to the hook
shaft, whereas J-hooks have points which are parallel to the shaft.
Circle hooks greatly reduce the capture rate of bycatch. 18/0 circle hooks, used by the
United States Pelagic Longline Fleet, reduced capture of sea turtles by 65-90% (Watson et al.
2005:Gilmen et al.2007). In other experiments, circle hooks were shown to hook 85% of fish in
the mouth and 4% in the gut, while J-hooks caught 25% in the gut. This is significant because fish
hooked in the mouth instead of the gut have a much better chance of survival when released.
